Aromatherapy is a great way to battle insomnia and a technique that has been around for years. Aromatherapy is not just for insomnia, it can help heal numerous physical and emotional conditions as well.
Recent studies have shown the brain has the ability to associate memories with smells on a subconscious level. For example, the smell of baking cookies may instantaneously bring special childhood memories to your mind. Different smells can activate precise memories, feelings, and emotions.
Often times, the daily pressure of work, family, and finances allow stress to build up in the mind and the body. By mixing specific aromatherapy oils you can produce a scent that promotes relaxation, which in return helps to promote sleep.
Aromatherapy to Help You Sleep
If you are having trouble sleeping, try these suggestions:
It is a pretty well-known fact taking a nice warm bath about an hour before bed is relaxing and promotes sleep. Now, add an essential oil such as lavender to your bath water and soak. You will be breathing in the scent of the lavender and this will increase your relaxation. Keep in mind; never take a bath right before you go to bed, this raises your body temperature and will keep you awake, so go to bed about an hour after the bath, and you should be feeling relaxed and sleepy by then.
You can also put an essential oil such as lavender on a cotton ball and gently sniff it, or spray your pillow and sheets very lightly about a half an hour before bed.
