How Often Should You Get a Massage?

Arthritis pain in the knee hampers many people. The condition often gets worse as the pain limits the mobility of the sufferers. You need to increase the blood flow to the muscles around the knee to restore some of the mobility and make it feel better. One of the best ways to do this is to have at least three massage sessions per week that last for up to an hour. There are two types of massage therapies that are effective in relieving the pain and symptoms caused by an arthritic knee. One is called a deep tissue massage and the other is referred to as a Swedish massage.

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

The deep tissue massage therapy is used to stretch the fibrous tissue connected to the muscles in your body. Loosening the fibrous tissue helps you to move your knee around and helps the massage therapist to manipulate the muscles so they can massage them better. You will be asked to lay flat on your back on a massage table. The therapist will put some lotion on your leg and rub it into your skin. The therapist will then use the knuckles of their fingers and their fingertips to press down on the tissue and muscles so they can rub it around. You should feel relief from the tightness and pain almost immediately.

Swedish Massage Therapy

The therapist uses the Swedish massage therapy technique to loosen and soothe the muscle around the knee and in the leg. The therapist begins by rubbing your leg in long strokes with the palm of their hand to relax the surface layer of the thick muscles in your thigh and lower leg. The therapist will then knead the muscles with their thumb and knuckles. Cupped hands are used to rhythmically pound against your leg to help the deep part of the muscles relax. The final step is typically rocking a hand from palm to fingertip up and down the muscles to relax them. This therapy helps the large muscles in your leg to relax to reduce the amount of tightness and stress they put on the muscles around the knee.

Repeating these massage therapy techniques at least three times a week will help make your knee feel better so you can walk around easier.
